"One of the primary reasons to produce a subsequent edition of a book is to update crucial information that was either incompletely covered or unavailable when the previous edition of the book appeared. In the field of media, it feels like we could produce a new edition every day and still not keep up with everything we see happening around us. That said, what we keep from edition to edition and why we keep it can be just as important as what we cut or add. This became clear to me when I was reading some suggestions I received in advance of doing a rewrite of one of the books in the Dynamics series. A reviewer left this note about the book's approach to social media: Twitter is dead as far as my students are concerned. You may have different information on this demographic, but I don't even teach my students how to write for Twitter since no one uses it. No one? According to social media research, more than 106 million people in the United States, as of April 2024. That number climbs to more than 335 million when considering the global population of users. I've heard similar things about Facebook, even though it remains the most used social media platform on Earth, with 3.1 billion users, and is projected to continue growing through at least 2028. Whether students perceive Twitter (now known as X) to be "dead" in their peer group also is beside the point. This approach is akin to opening a diner and saying, "All of my waitstaff use digital payment methods, so I'm not going to teach any of them how to take cash and make change," or "All of my servers are in their 20s, so I'm not going to have a Seniors' Section of the menu for the 60+ crowd.""--
