This volume presents the actual case histories of 157 patients who were discussed at recent tumor board conferences. The case presentations follow the structure of the tumor board conference, in which an interdisciplinary group of physicians examines a specific case, explores various treatment options, and reaches a consensus on treatment. Each case presentation includes comments from physicians representing diverse specialties and treatment approaches. The cases were selected to demonstrate key principles of pretreatment evaluation and treatment selection. Coverage spans a spectrum of clinical problems, including localized and metastatic cancer in virtually every anatomic site, at different stages, and in different age groups, as well as in patients with AIDS and other diseases. Included are patient management problems for surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiotherapists. The book contains both standard cases, where clinical trial data clearly support a treatment choice, and controversial cases requiring treatment selection based on inconclusive data.
