Motor neurone disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is one of several neurological diseases of unknown cause. It is an illness that rarely runs in families, nor do epidemics occur. It is therefore likely to be due to a multifactorial process, probably with a genetically determined susceptibility to some environmental insult.
