The study of Africa and its diaspora continues to grow to include regions outside of the US, and this revision includes not only the US but also the entire western hemisphere including Central and South America and the Caribbean. It includes biographical sketches of important individuals in the evolution of diasporic societies, events and institutions. It addresses those themes and topics critical to an understanding of the cultures, achievements, problems, challenges, and promise of the 150 million people of African heritage who inhabit the Americas in the twenty-first century.
