This monumental comprehensive textbook is edited by Oski, (Johns Hopkins), Catherine D. DeAngelis (Johns Hopkins), and Jos. Washburn (Yale). It is a worthy challenger to the ascendant Nelson, 13th edition and Hoekelman. Some 265 contributors, virtually all associated with a medical school. The organization is unusual: the five parts--general pediatrics, fetus and newborn, ambulatory pediatrics, a brief catchall on lab values, signs and differential diagnosis (the 99 most common syndromes)--group the demands upon the student or pediatrician in practical, predictable categories. The 800 illustrations are generally only fair; but we easily recognize that they have not been included with the intention of fluffing up the book. An impressive work.
