"The Navy in India", first published in 1931, was Richmond's second major historical work. Based on archival documentation in Britain, France, Ceylon and the Dutch colonies at the Cape, this is a detailed study of political and operational decision-making as it affected the war in the east between 1779 and 1783. Richmond's primary objectives were to analyze both policy and the way in which causes affected strategy, and to comment on the influence governing the tactics employed by individual commanders. He stressed the vital strategic role of Singapore before its eventual fall, and was concerned with the general impact of logistical and health problems on individual campaigns.
