Lange (nursing, Quinnipiac U.) examines the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of older adults based on a holistic nursing theory of successful aging, for nursing faculty, students, and practitioners. An interdisciplinary group of US and international health care professionals in areas ranging from nutrition to law to nursing discusses the nurse's role in promoting healthy aging; what it means to age successfully; characteristics of older adults; the importance of collaborative care; normal aging and physical changes; economic, legal, and social aspects; mental wellness, spirituality, and the end of life; international perspectives; and what tools, skills, resources, and knowledge can be used to optimize well-being. Recommendations are drawn from sources such as the Hartford Institute of Geriatric Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Geriatric and End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortia, and the Institute of Medicine as embedded in the six Quality and Safety Education for Nursing Competencies.
