With the shift towards primary care in gynaecology, there is a need for a new reference on women's medicine written for the practising gynaecologist, acting as primary care physician, to use as a resource for the medical care of women through the reproductive years to post-menopause. This discusses general medical disorders presenting in the office setting and will focus on areas where gynaecologic treatment impinges on pre-existing medical conditions or organ systems or systemic disease and its impact on gynaecologic management. The format concentrates on presentation of problems, differential diagnosis, workup, therapy, including a discussion of pharmacology, follow-up, when to refer a patient for a particular disease process and what the patient might expect in terms of evaluation. The approach is reader-friendly, with a practical, management guideline orientation for the busy gynaecologist or internist.
