The World Trade Center remained the tallest skyscraper in the "city of skyscrapers" until it was destroyed in a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. An important symbol of American achievement and confidence in the future when it transformed the Manhattan skyline in the 1970's, it remains a symbol today, although a transformed one whose meaning, like the nation's future, has yet to be completely redefined.
