Biopsy: Interpretation of the Liver

A biopsy is a medical procedure, performed by an interventional radiologist or cardiologist, or a surgeon, involving the extraction of tissue or cell samples for determining the presence or extent of a disease. The tissue is then examined by a pathologist and analyzed chemically. A biopsy is performed on a liver in patients with hepatitis, for determining response to therapy. In this, it is assessed if the inflammation of the liver has been reduced and the progression of the disease based on the degree of fibrosis is determined. A liver biopsy may also be performed in the case of Wilson's disease to determine the quantitative copper level in the body.
