Animal Virology

Animal virology is the science concerned with the study of viruses in animals. It is a sub-field of veterinary medicine. Several families of viruses are of particular interest in the study of animal virology, such as rhabdoviruses, pestiviruses, arteriviruses, toroviruses, coronaviruses, circoviruses, etc. Rhabdoviruses are a family of single stranded RNA viruses which can infect insects, fish and mammals. Notable examples of rhabdoviruses are rabies virus and vesicular stomatitis virus. Foot-and-mouth disease virus is a cause of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. Pestiviruses cause bovine viral diarrhea and classical swine fever. RNA viruses of the family orthomyxoviridae cause influenza in birds and mammals.
