Next generation coatings comprise of various materials used for covering surfaces of complex objects to serve specific purposes such as rendering the surfaces hydrophobic or resistant to corrosion or making them bioactive or bioinert etc. In this book, several research articles pertaining to the deposition, characterization and application of these coatings in various domains of research have been compiled. In chapter 1, investigation of biomimetic coatings such as calcium phosphate on porous bioinert alumina samples is detailed. Such coatings are necessary to render the alumina bioactive which is suitable for the tissue scaffold application. The material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cell culture and confocal microscopy. Whereas in chapter 2, the deposition of biocide physical vapor deposition (PVD) coatings of silver and copper-doped chromium nitride (CrN) and titanium nitride (TiN) on glazed ceramic tiles to provide antibacterial activity to them without degrading their mechanical properties has been described. Chapter 3 highlights the recent technical advances in nanotechnological routes and the various barrier properties and functionalities of the bio-based nano composite coatings such as nanoclay and nanocellulose as paper coatings. Chapter 4 is a research article on the interaction of various substrates with electrolyte during electrodeposition of niobium coatings with special focus on the corrosion resistance of molybdenum coated spherical ceramic and beryllium substrates. This study is critical to obtain smooth uniform high-purity superconductive niobium coatings which are used in high-tech cryogenic devices. Chapter 5 and 6 are research articles on the experimental insights about the various parameters affecting the thickness, porosity, residual stresses and microhardness and microstructure, phase composition and decarburization of the WC-17Co coatings obtained by the high velocity oxy-fuel spray. These parameters comprise of the stand-off distance, the spray angle and the gun traverse speed. In chapter 7 a laser based coating process with minimum thermal load on the temperature sensitive base materials such as aluminum alloy - AIMgSi1 has been described. Chapter 8 is a research article on the tribocorrosion behavior of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-coated AZ91 samples comparing the effect of two different coatings-alkaline electrolytes one containing sodium phosphate and the other containing sodium silicate. In chapter 9 a strategy to join aluminium to steel while preventing the formation of brittle Fe-Al intermetallic compounds such as Fe2AI5 has been elucidated. Ni electroplated coating applied onto a steel surface is deemed to prevent the formation of this brittle compound. In this work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the dissimilar Al/steel joints with and without a nickel coating are comparatively investigated. Whereas chapter 10 focuses on the microstructure evolution, the hardness and wear-resistance of an electro brush plated chromium (Cr) coating on AISI 5140 steel followed by annealing treatment at different temperature (300 to 1100 °C). Chapter 11 elucidates the effect of the concentration of the TiO2 in the Pd-Ni/TiO2 composite coatings, which were electrodeposited on 316L stainless steel, on the crystal grain size and on the mechanical and electrochemical properties. Effect of current and pulse-on time on the hardness of electrical discharge coating process, as used for the development of TiC-Fe cermet coatings on 304 stainless steel, has been investigated in last chapter 12. This book with a compilation of the latest research and review articles will provide the material scientists, biologists, chemists and device engineers with valuable information and strategies to keep themselves abreast with the latest development in the field of coatings.
