Nineteenth century English literature is re- markable both for high artistic achievement and for variety. The greatest literary move- ment of its earlier period was that of roman- ticism. It was born in the atmosphere of the violent economic and political turmoil that marked the last decades of the 18th and the first decades of the 19th century. In this book, we will study the development of neoclassi- cal aesthetics and the renewal of the theater in the restoration period before exploring the development of Enlightenment philosophy and its relationship to key literary develop- ments of the first half of the 18th century from political satire to Alexander Pope's famous mock-epic, the Rape of the Lock.
