Allegiance to Race? "The Politics of African American Academic Intellectuals" challenges the meaning and practice of racial identity among African American academic intellectuals. Specifically, the book explores how particular self-understandings of racial identity affect the different ways in which academic scholars choose to be political (or not), how they understand what it means to be political, and what meeting one's political responsibility involves within the confines of American academic culture.
