Another eyesight: multi-sensory design in context

The subject covered by the book is very large and involves many fields of study and practice and it is not our intention to deal with all of these in detail. Indeed in some areas we would like to hear from specialists who have, and may not realize it, vital information to us. The days of academic isolation are gone; we now have to work together. For this reason we offer this book as a box of ideas and suggest you get on with it. Certainly there is room for more thought and lots of research. Much of this book is about the sensory environment, its appreciation and significance. Another aspect of the book is suggestions as to how one might carefully redesign the environment where necessary. This must be done with understanding and the process is currently called design. The Latin origin of this word is designare, to 'mark out'. The first work carried out by us was to make guide tapes specifically for blind visitors to cathedrals.
