Atlas of Contraception

There are, today, over 400 million users of contraceptive methods around the world - and in the 1990s it is expected that a further 250 million users will be seeking contraception. A full understanding of the techniques available and the issues involved is of great importance for all health care providers. This atlas looks in detail at modern methods of contraception used around the world. It also discusses some methods that are currently being researched. The contents include: oral contraception - the different types, the side effects, benefits, risks; different types of IUDs - their methods of insertion and removal, their advantages, disadvantages; implants - the mode of insertion; injectables; barrier methods; breast feeding - its contraceptive effect; techniques of predicting the fertile period (natural family planning); female sterilization techniques, male sterilization (vasectomy) techniques; and how contraceptives work. This illustrated atlas with its explanatory text is intended to assist in a better understanding of the different methods of contraception available, as well as their relative advantages and disadvantages.
