In 1998 Barkow Leibinger achieved instant acclaim with the completion of their innovative laser factory near Stuttgart. Their style of architecture is both functional and undogmatic, as can be seen in their earlier projects, in particular the daycare and youth centre in Berlin Buchholz built in 1994. Recalling the great tradition of German Industrial architecture of Behrens, Groupius and Mendelsohn, their factory designs form an important part of their work with the Trumpf Customer and Technology Center in Farmington/Connecticut or the Start-up centre in Switzerland being prime examples. Their design for the American Pavillon at the EXPO2000 in Hanover, which was awarded first prize, and the biosphere for the National Horticultural Show in 2001 in Potsdam are further highlights in their portfolio. Some 15 projects will be presented in this monograph which is their first book publication.
