Biology of Populus and Its Implications for Management and Conservation

This book presents a series of separately authored chapters on recent advances in the research on the genus Populus, which comprises about 30 species of poplars, aspens, and cottonwoods. Part I covers Populus evolution, genetics, and genetic manipulation and includes chapters on systematics, genecology, life history and ecology of riparian cottonwoods, hybridization, controlled reproduction, poplar breeding and selection, quantitative genetics, molecular genetics, cellular and molecular biology, fungal pathogens, and the ecological and evolutionary implications of Populus hybridization. Part II covers physiology and includes chapters on leaf growth, secondary tissues, root systems, carbon acquisition and allocation, water relations, stress physiology, production physiology, linking physiology and molecular genetics, and trends in poplar culture.
