Centrosomes in Development and Disease

Located at the centre of the animal cell, the centrosome has long been considered a mysterious organelle. However, recent years have seen tremendous advances in our understanding of centrosome structure and composition, and the functions of centrosomes in cell division, shape, and motility are being elucidated at a rapid pace. Centrosome components have been linked to multiple diseases, and the demonstration of frequent centrosome abnormalities in many human tumours has revived interest in the role of this organelle during carcinogenesis.This book summarizes our current knowledge of the structure, function and evolution of centrosomes and related microtubule-organizing centres. Reflecting recent discoveries and ongoing research, it emphasizes the role of centrosomes in development and disease, with a particular focus on cancer.
