This book provides illustrated and comprehensive coverage of emergency medicine, with an emphasis on management. This new edition covers all emergencies, not just those that are surgically related as in the first edition, and this wider scope is reflected in the title change. Other key differences are: 40% more illustrations and an expanded text; different organization, following that of the major text references; the first section on resuscitation follows exactly the recently published guidelines from the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course of the American College of Surgeons. Other new sections are: environmental emergencies - radiation, drowning, diving; psychiatric - covering acutely psychotic patients, mania stupors, alcohol/drug abuse etc; acute medical problems - a major new section with core text emphasizing management principles; major disasters - covering planning with reference to recent major disasters eg Kegworth, Piper Alpha, King's Cross etc; physical and sexual abuse; medicolegal - covering general principles of how to avoid problems, and areas to be aware of; and gynaecological emergencies, acute back pain and abdominal emergencies.
