Overview

Environmental microbiologists study the composition and relationship of microorganisms in the environmentthe soil, air, and water. Although they are extremely tiny, microbial life can be extremely complex and diverse. For example, an average gram of soil contains approximately one billion microbes, representing several thousand species. Environmental microbiologists look at the relationships of these microbes with each other, with other species, and with their environment.Selected Contents: Transmission of Vibrio cholerae Is Antagonized by Lytic Phage and Entry into the Aquatic Environment; Genotype-by-Environment Interactions and Adaptation to Local Temperature Affect Immunity and Fecundity in Drosophila melanogaster; Surveillance of Arthropod Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases Using Remote Sensing Techniques: A Review; Nonrandom Distribution of Vector Ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) Infected by Francisella tularensis; Environmental Induction of WhiteOpaque Switching in Candida albicans; A Suite of Recombinant Luminescent Bacterial Strains for the Quantification of Bioavailable Heavy Metals and Toxicity Testing; Accumulation of Pathological Prion Protein PrPSc in the Skin of Animals with Experimental and Natural Scrapie; Oral Transmissibility of Prion Disease Is Enhanced by Binding to Soil Particles; Immunological Mechanisms Mediating Hantavirus Persistence in Rodent Reservoirs; Environmental Dimensionality Controls the Interaction of Phagocytes with the Pathogenic Fungi Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans; SIVsm Quasispecies Adaptation to a New Simian Host; WaterfowlThe Missing Link in Epidemic and Pandemic Cholera Dissemination?; Genetic Response to Climatic Change: Insights from Ancient DNA and Phylochronology; Index
