Fascism and European Literature - Faschismus und Europdische Literatur

The studies in this volume combine two areas of research, literary history and social science, in an investigation of the impact of fascism on the various national literatures in Europe. The results demonstrate not only the range of meanings fascism acquired in the different national contexts, but also and particularly the great variety, complexity and at times obscurity of individual motives for involvement with fascism. Only rarely is literature shown to record historical processes in a straightforward documentary manner. Usually it is the manner of literary representation, and not merely its subject matter, that reveals the imprint of historical experience.Die vorliegenden Studien verbinden eine literaturwissenschaftliche mit einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung, die den Einfluß des Faschismus auf die Literaturen europäischer Länder untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen nicht nur, welche Bedeutung dem Faschismus innerhalb des jeweiligen nationalen Kontextes zukam, sondern ebensosehr die große Vielfalt, Komplexität und zuweilen Undurchsichtigkeit der individuel61476otive, die zum persönlichen Engagement mit dem Faschismus führten. Nur selten verzeichnet Literatur historische Prozesse in direkter dokumentarischer Weise. Die Spuren des historischen Erlebnisses sind nicht allein in der stofflichen Substanz, sondern auch - und vor allem - in der Art der literarischen Behandlung zu finden.
