Gamal Abdel Nasser arguably has had the greatest impact of any Middle Eastern leader of the twentieth century. His significance lies in his fostering of modern Pan-Arab thought, institutions, and policies, his transformation of Egypt from a feudal state under British protection to a developing industrial nation, and his contributions to third world politics. Despite his importance, however, the last thorough examination of Nasser's life and impact was published more than twenty years ago.
