Overview

Manufactured products are made from atoms, and the properties of those products depend on how those atoms are arranged. For instance, if we rearrange the atoms in coal we can make diamond; if we rearrange the atoms in sand (and add a few other trace elements) we can make computer chips. But today's manufacturing methods are very crude at the molecular level. They can only deal with molecules at large-scale levels. It's like trying to make a tiny model of a ship with boxing gloves on. In the future, nanotechnology will let us take off the boxing gloves. Nanotechnology manipulates matter on an atomic and molecular scale. It deals with structures of the size 100 nanometers or smaller, and involves developing materials or devices within that size.Selected Contents: Nanotechnology and the Developing World; Nature's Nanotechnologists: Unveiling the Secrets of Diatoms; Nanomaterials for Hydrogen Storage Applications: A Review; Nanostructured Mesoporous Silicas for Bone Tissue Regeneration; Nanostructural Organization of Naturally Occurring CompositesPart I: Silica-Collagen-Based Biocomposites; Nanostructural Organization of Naturally Occurring CompositesPart II: Silica-Chitin-Based Biocomposites; Nanomechanics of Single Crystalline Tungsten Nanowires; Nanomaterials Enhanced Gene Expression in Yeast Cells; Morphology and Properties of Aminosilane Grafted MWCNT/Polyimide Nanocomposites; Effect of Ammonium Nitrate on Nanoparticle Size Reduction; Mesoporous Silica Coated CeF3:Tb3+ Particles for Drug Release; Development of Photocatalytic Active TiO2 Surfaces by Thermal Spraying of Nanopowders; Effect of Carbon Nanofiber-Matrix Adhesion on Polymeric Nanocomposite Properties; Silver Nanoparticles Confined in SBA-15 Mesoporous Silica and the Application as a Sensor for Detecting Hydrogen Peroxide; Lessons from a Failed Experiment: Zinc Silicates with Complex Morphology by Reaction of Zinc Acetate, the Ionic Liquid Precursor (ILP) Tetrabutylammonium Hydroxide(TBAH),
