Soil degradation processes such as drought, soil erosion or soil pollution are occurring fre- quently, and as a result, land fertility or pro- ductivity has been declining. Fertilizer use is not an end in itself. Rather, it is a means of achieving increased food and fiber produc- tion. This book examines the factors under- lying present fertilizer usage. These factors include the agro-ecological conditions, the structure of farming, cropping patterns, the economics of organic fertilizers.
