The governments of many countries in Africa, Asia and South America have failed to tackle the housing problem in a coherent way. The rapidly increasing gap between supply and demand has led to the proliferation of informal settlements and the growth of shanty towns, offering precarious and dismal conditions to their residents. The purpose of this book is to give a clear understanding of the physical and non-physical structure in bottom-up housing approaches through the use of in-depth family case studies from Africa, Asia and South America.
