In the past ten years, considerable research has been carried out independently by many countries into the atmospheric icing of structures, especially in connection with icing of transmission lines and telecommunication towers. These developments are surveyed in the book, and the current position of the theory of atmospheric icing on simple structures is presented. A comprehensive account of the mathematical formulation of such 'real-world' problems is given, and many new methods for their solution are described. Particular emphasis is given to the analytical and numerical solution of linear and non-linear evolution equations which describe the growth process. Illustrations of the mathematical models are drawn from a variety of fields, including mathematics, numerical analysis, electrical, civil and aeronautical engineering, in particular, the role of meteorological variables is highlighted.
