Linguistic Diversity and European Democracy

This work examines legal and socio-linguistic aspects of language diversity in the European Union, the role and functioning of language policy at both national and European levels, and the relationship between democracy and language rights. The volume casts new light on the issue of language rights within the EU vis-agrave;-vis legal and political theories of law and democracy on the one hand and sociolinguistic theories on language use on the other. In this way the study presents a cross-disciplinary perspective on the three main subjects related to the broader questions of language rights: " Language Regime in the European Union: Underlying Principles and Objectives; " Plurality of Languages and European Democracy; " Language Rights and Language Policy: Regional Languages and Language Minorities within the Nation States. The work will be a valuable resource for academics and researchers in the areas of European law, legal theory, and language.
