Sex & Gender Differences Revisited New Perspectives and New Findings

In this journal issue, Hausmann (psychology, Durham U., UK) and Schober (psychology, U. of Vienna, Austria) compile seven articles and two opinion papers that share research on sex and gender differences in various psychological disciplines and demonstrate the psychobiological approach to the field. They discuss sex differences in specific cognitive variables, focusing on relevant biological and social factors underlying differences, and new findings on mechanisms behind gender differences from applied research on education, work, and science. Essays consider gender stereotypes and their effects on mental rotation performance in primary school children, effects of stereotypes on cognitive sex differences in verbal ability, math skills in primary school children, spatial information processing, the negative consequences of attractiveness in female leaders, science careers and women, and fairness in science funding.
