Signs, Symbols, Pictograms

The world is full of signs, symbols and pictograms. And every single one of them is adapted to a specific function. The message they convey has to be comprehensible, regardless of region of origin, language or culture. Their language, as a result, needs to be universal: easily understood, unambiguous and intelligible- not least because they serve to substitute actual, written language. Still, in spite of these requirements, there is enough room for variation and innovation. And the quest for such new forms, which are still able to convey meaning in a universal way, is an intriguing undertaking. This should be reason enough to devote a whole book to new approaches to the task of designing signs, symbols and pictograms.
