Overview

The popularizing educational book, intended for the general public, deals with the origins of life, species and man. The topic, which has held the interests of scientists and the general public for more than two hundred years, is considered in the manuscript with two intertwined objectives. The first is to convey the advances made in cosmology, molecular biology, genetics and other sciences, which have enabled us to change our views on our origins and our relationship with the Universe. Scientific advances now allow us to calculate, for example, the age of the Universe, the period in which biblical (mitochondrial) Eve lived, and, with good justification, to reject the possibility that the Neanderthals and primates might be our ancestors. The second is related to biological evolution and an explanation of why evolution cannot have taken place. The focus, bearing in mind the lay reader, is on gene stability, and on the sophisticated modern techniques for gene manipulation, whose complicatedness make them inaccessible to nature. Development of life on Earth towards Man is presented here as a discontinuous saltatory progression which results in stages that follow on from preceding latent periods, and in which new forms suddenly appear possessing new types of genome. Selected results are difficult to reconcile with the hypothesis of continuous biological evolution based on the natural selection of random variations. They indicate rather a plan developed well in advance, subsequently realized within the appropriate steps. The book divided into six chapters, comprises 66 typewritten manuscript pages, four appendices, 28 references and a small glossary of 33 terms, particularly those, used in molecular biology and genetics."
