From Library Journal Focusing on ancient instruments, practices, and beliefs, Lewis provides excerpts on 400 principal topics drawn from 250 original sources on music and mythology. Unfortunately, he is neither comprehensive nor always faithful to his sources (e.g., passages are sometimes dropped without added ellipses). Also, the supplementary material should have been integrated into the central text to avoid the labyrinth created by the two current volumes. However, although most libraries with the various Grove publications (e.g., New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians , LJ 12/15/80, and New Grove Dictionary of Opera , 1992, both Grove's "Dictionaries of Music") and The Golden Bough (St. Martin's, 1969) will find this work redundant, it merits inclusion in large academic and public libraries as a compact source that can lead to better works. A third volume, Essay on Myth and Reality , is scheduled for release in April 1993.- Anthony J. Adam, Prairie View A&M Univ. Lib., Tex.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
