Thus the human history of the region remained shrouded in mystery. The Prehistoric studies in Keralam have unraveled the cultural continuity in the region beginning from Lower paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Megalithic and early Historic, ect. Rajendran was awarded Doctorate in Archaeology by Poona University in the year 1981. He has conducted several explorations ann excavations not only in Keralam but also in the adjacent regions like Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and coastal karnataka. He has more than hundred and twelve articles published in Regional, National and International journals and a book. His research work had laid a strong foundation in the Archaeological studies in keralam. He is credited with an initiative to establish the first Archaeology Department in Keralam under Kerala University
