Transnational Corporations and the Global Economy

Thirteen essays caution against the idea that geography and history are of less and less importance and that a complete dismantling of the economic institutions of the nation state will lead to rapid and broad-based development of a global economy. A number of approaches are taken, recalling of earlier episodes of globalization; questioning the extent to which a global economy has arrived, or is likely to do so; and describing the very different dynamics resulting from the interaction of national and international forces. Two broad themes underpin the contributions. First, the complexity of the links between domestic economic institutions and transnational corporations are explored. Second, the need for diversity in the design and implementation of economic policy because countries at different levels of development face differing problems is explained.
